ARH 407 New Approaches to Medieval Art
This seminar will serve as a workshop to research and write the materials for the spring 2012 exhibit of new Special Collections acquisitions at the Portland State Millar Library. These materials include two Quran pages, an Ethiopian Magic Scroll, an Armenian Prayer Roll, and part of a Coptic illuminated manuscript. We’ll begin with reading and discussion of recent scholarship in the field and then the rest of the seminar will be devoted to mentoring student research and writing. Fall 2011 Sophomore Inquiry Class Themes

We have an interesting group of Sophomore Inquiry classes coming up this fall, below are their topics listed by instructor. Note that any student can take one of the Sophomore Inquiry classes, and the theme of your SINQ doesn’t limit which upper level classes you can take within the cluster. As always, feel free to contact the Cluster Coordinator (Prof McClanan, anne [at] if you have any questions.

Armantrout: We will be looking at a number of documents to examine the ideas of Justice and Law in ancient Greece.  To this end we will consider other concepts such as the role of the divine and of the state and how perceptions of all of these things change through time.

Batchelder: This course will examine the 19th century as one of the great turning points in European, and consequently World, history. We will examine the ways in which our modern sense of self and identity was forged through the creation of modern nation states and the modern notions of “Freedom,” “Equality,” and “Happiness.”

Corning: What was the Romantic moment?  Something new and different was happening in the closing years of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth, something that involved politics, literature, music, the visual arts, philosophy.  What was the common factor?  That’s still a topic of controversy.  We will examine representative historical, literary, and artistic texts to discover their connections.

Perala: This SINQ explores intersection of literature and culture at the Victorian fin de siecle. The aesthetic and decadent movements provided a philosophy for social reform, decorative and fine art, the proper aim of literature, sexual discourse, and experimental work that marked a decisive break from high-Victorian realism and moral instruction.
